いいかげん【好い加減】

1 ～な 〔おざなりな〕 perfunctory; 〔無責任な〕 irresponsible; 〔投げやりな〕 negligent; 〔ずさんな〕 careless; slipshod; sloppy.

●いいかげんな態度 an irresponsible attitude

・君のいいかげんな態度が彼女を怒らせたんだ. Your lukewarm attitude made her angry.

・いいかげんな仕事をする do slipshod [shoddy] work

・いいかげんな返事をする give a careless [slipshod] answer; give a halfhearted answer

・彼は私の指示にいつもいいかげんな返事しかしない. He only comes out with vague [《口》 wishy-washy] responses to my orders.

・彼の答弁はすこぶるいいかげんなものだった. His explanation was very sloppy.

・犬がしゃべったって? そんないいかげんな話が信じられるか. A dog talked? Do you expect me to believe that kind of outlandish story?

・卒業式にそんないいかげんな服装で出てはいけない. You can't go to the graduation ceremony wearing a sloppy outfit like that.

・自分で召集した会議に欠席するなんてずいぶんいいかげんな人だな. What an irresponsible person, not to attend the meeting he himself called!

・「借りた本, もう返したよな」「まだじゃないか, いいかげんなこと言うなよ」 “I've returned the book I borrowed from you, haven't I?”―“No, you haven't. Don't treat the matter so cavalierly.”

・このビルの設計には所々いいかげんなところがある. The design of this building is slipshod in some places.

・そういういいかげんな処置が警察への不信を招くんだ. That way of handling things will only invite mistrust of the police.

●彼のドイツ語はかなりいいかげんだ. His German is pretty broken.

2 〔生半可〕 ～な half-baked.

●そんないいかげんな心構えでは成功しないぞ. You'll never succeed with such a half-baked attitude. | You'll never succeed with such half-done preparations.

・あの子はいいかげんな叱り方では言うことをきかない. That child won't behave if he's scolded in such a half-hearted way.

3 〔かなり〕 pretty; rather.

●いいかげん酔った. I am rather tipsy. | I'm quite drunk.

・彼の無断欠席は 3 回目だからね. いいかげん腹が立つよ. He's been absent three time without notice. Yes, that really makes me angry.

・あの男にはいいかげん愛想がつきた. I am quite disgusted with him.

・この絵もいいかげん見飽きた. I am very tired of looking at this picture.

いい加減さ irresponsibleness; perfunctoriness; halfheartedness.

いい加減に 1 〔おざなりに･無責任に〕 haphazardly; slipshoddily; irresponsibly.

●現政権について意見を求められたが, 興味がないのでいいかげんに答えておいた. I was asked my opinion of the present administration, but gave an offhand answer because I'm not interested in it.

・いいかげんにあしらっておきなさい. Put him off with evasive answers.

・一人暮らしなので食事がいいかげんになってしまう. I live alone, so I don't pay much attention to [am rather careless regarding] my meals.

・彼女は何事もいいかげんにしない. She does nothing in a slipshod way.

2 〔ほどほどに〕

●いいかげんにしておきなさい. You've done enough; it's time to stop. | All right, enough's enough.

・冗談もいいかげんにしなさい. I wish you would stop joking. | Don't drive your jokes too far. | Don't go too far with your jokes. | Enough of your jokes!

・自慢話はいいかげんにしろ. No more of your bragging.

・一週間も降りっぱなしだ. いいかげんにやまないかな. It's been raining for a week now. Isn't it time for it to stop [let up]?

よいかげん【好い加減】

～な good enough; 〔ほどよい〕 moderate; suitable.

●よい加減に well; moderately; 〔料理加減が〕 to a turn.

・この肉はよい加減に焼けている. This steak is done to a turn.

・肉はちょうどよい加減に煮えている. The meat is cooked just enough.

●〔風呂･酒の燗(_かん)などが〕 ああよい加減だ. Ah, just right.
